Olympic vs. Traditional Taekwondo: What’s the Difference?

Taekwondo is one of the most popular martial arts in the world, but not all Taekwondo is practiced the same way. Two major styles dominate the landscape: Olympic Taekwondo and Traditional Taekwondo. Olympic Taekwondo (WT Style)

Also known as World Taekwondo (WT) style, Olympic Taekwondo is the version you see in the Summer Olympic Games. It emphasizes sport competition, using electronic scoring gear and strict rules.

The focus is on speed, agility, and high-impact kicking, particularly to the torso and head. Punches to the body are allowed, but kicks score higher—especially spinning or jumping kicks.

Traditional Taekwondo (ITF and Others)

Traditional Taekwondo, which is often associated with the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), leans more toward martial art and self-defense. It includes a wider variety of hand techniques, low kicks, and forms (known as patterns or poomsae) with deeper stances. Training often emphasizes discipline, philosophy, and practical applications, not just competition.

  1. Dear Globalmartialarts University,

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for sharing such an insightful article. Your words truly reflect the values and philosophy that martial arts bring into our lives. As someone who has dedicated years to Taekwondo, both as a national and international competitor, I deeply appreciate how you highlighted the importance of discipline, respect, and perseverance.

Over the years, I have had the honor of not only competing but also coaching students and serving as a Taekwondo referee. These roles have allowed me to witness the transformative power of martial arts in people’s lives—helping children build confidence, guiding athletes toward peak performance, and inspiring communities to embrace physical and mental strength.

I believe your article aligns with the same mission I carry through my platform, TaekwondoKing.com

My goal is to create a hub for students, coaches, and martial arts enthusiasts who want to dive deeper into Taekwondo beyond just the practice mat.

Thank you again for your valuable contribution to the martial arts community. I hope more readers find their way to your article, and I would be honored if they also visit my platform to continue learning and growing in the martial arts journey.

    With respect and gratitude,
