Beginner Bo (Staff) Striking Combinations Explained

The bo (staff) is one of the most versatile traditional weapons. But for beginners it can feel overwhelming at first. Where do you start? The answer: simple striking patterns. Instead of memorizing dozens of techniques, focus on a few core patterns that build coordination, control, and flow. These patterns act as the building blocks for everything that comes later in your training. Read on for more!

Why Striking Patterns Matter

Patterns are the foundation of effective bo training. They help you:

  • Develop muscle memory.
  • Improve grip transitions.
  • Build rhythm and timing.
  • Create fluid combinations.

Beyond repetition, patterns also train your brain to link movements together. This creates smoother transitions between techniques and reduces hesitation during practice.

5 Basic Bo Strikes

Before learning patterns, make sure you can properly do these core strikes:

  1. Overhead Front Strike.
  2. Upward strike with heel of the bo.
  3. Downward strike with tip of the bo.
  4. Front Thrust.
  5. Reverse Thrust.

Each of these strikes teaches a different mechanic—vertical power, lateral movement, or forward projection. When combined, they form the foundation of nearly every bo sequence you’ll encounter.

Beginner Pattern #1: Four-Point Combo

  • In a right-dominant stance, do an upward strike with the heel of the bo followed by a downward strike with the tip of the bo.
  • Reset briefly and repeat 10 times.
  • Swich to a left-dominant stance and repeat the combo set.

This pattern introduces level changes. Focus on maintaining balance as you do the upward and downward strikes, keeping your core engaged throughout.

Beginner Pattern #2: Front and Reverse Strikes Combo

  • In a right-dominant stance, pull the bo back and thrust forward into a long stance.
  • Turn and do a reverse thrust to an imaginary opponent’s face.
  • Reset briefly and repeat 10 times.
  • Switch to a left-dominant stance and repeat the combo set.

This pattern reinforces bilateral coordination. Many beginners favor one side, so practicing evenly helps eliminate imbalances and builds symmetrical strength and control.

Beginner Pattern #3: Overhead Front Strike and Front-Thrust Combo

  • In a right-dominant stance, do an overhead front strike immediately followed by a front thrust.
  • Reset briefly and repeat 10 times.
  • Swich to a left-dominant stance and repeat the combo set.

Like the other combos, this teaches continuous motion and helps you generate momentum.

Training Tips for Faster Progress

  • Start slow—speed comes later.
  • Practice in front of a mirror.
  • Focus on clean technique over power.
  • Train both sides equally.

Additionally, record yourself occasionally. Watching your own movement can reveal small technical issues that are difficult to notice in real time.

Mastering bo (staff) striking combos isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing the basics better. Build a strong foundation, and more advanced techniques will come naturally. Over time, these simple patterns evolve into fluid combinations that feel natural and instinctive.
