The Overhead Bo Front-Strike in 4 Easy Steps

The Bo (staff) overhead front-strike is a technique commonly used in various styles of bojutsu, the martial art of staff fighting. Proper technique involves arcing the staff overhead and down, targeting the opponent’s head or shoulder. It’s a powerful and versatile move that’s employed for both offensive and defensive purposes.

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4 … let’s go!

Step 1: The Chamber

First, chamber the bo on your shoulder with the staff HORIZONTAL to the floor.

Step 2: Push / Pull

PUSH with the front hand and PULL with the rear hand.

Step 3: Step Forward

Step into a strong forward stance (e.g., the “front stance” in Karate or Taekwondo) as you execute the strike.

Maintain a straight back (torso should be upright). The rear hand should finish at the hip and should not “disconnected” from the body.

Step 4: Finish

As you end your step into the front stance, your foot should stop moving at exactly the same time as Bo strikes the target.

This is the hardest step to get down, but once you do it will focus the energy of the strike and increase power.
