Krav Maga, a martial art developed by the Israeli military, emphasizes practical self-defense in real-world situations. Training in Krav Maga typically covers a range of situations, including those that might lead to ground encounters, to prepare practitioners for a variety of self-defense scenarios.
While Krav Maga places a strong emphasis on neutralizing threats quickly and efficiently, it also includes ground-fighting techniques.
Krav Maga ground fighting often involves defending against common attacks while someone’s on the ground, such as against kicks and attempts to mount that person. It also includes include escapes, sweeps, and counterattacks while on the ground.
In wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, grapplers often “stay down” and continue to control, pin, or submit their opponent. In Krav Maga, however, the focus is on creating an opportunity to stand up or disengage from the confrontation.
The goal in Krav Maga ground fighting is to survive and regain a standing position, recognizing that being on the ground in a self-defense scenario can be dangerous, especially when there are multiple attackers.
