5 Solo Nunchaku Drills to Boost Coordination

Training with nunchaku is an exciting way to build coordination, timing, and focus—even when you’re practicing solo. Whether you’re following a program like the one offered by the Global Martial Arts University or just looking to sharpen your skills, these five drills will help improve your control and flow.

1. Figure-8 Strikes (Forward and Reverse)

This foundational drill teaches fluid motion and wrist control.

Practice slow, controlled figure-8s, switching between forward and reverse directions.

It’s great for muscle memory and developing ambidextrous coordination.

2. Shoulder Passes

The classic over-the-shoulder pass strengthens hand-eye coordination and smooth weapon transitions.

Aim for fluid movement between left and right hands while keeping your eyes forward.

Follow along with GMAU Nunchaku Instructor Adam Gerrald and learn basic Nunchaku “tricks”!

3. Horizontal Strikes + Catch Drill

Practice horizontal strikes at shoulder height, immediately following each with a catch under the arm.

This builds accuracy, timing, and control under pressure—essential for flow and safety.

4. Triangle Strikes

Visualize a triangle in front of you and strike along its lines—left, right, and down.

This drill improves directional control and helps prepare you for practical combinations.

5. Wrist-Roll Practice

Wrist rolls look flashy, but they’re also powerful coordination builders.

Focus on slow, deliberate motion to build confidence in transitions and reduce hesitation.
